ATHLETES AND TEAM OF THE WEEK — Another big week for Stockwell, Macdonald

Photo by Ray Hamill/HumboldtSportscom – Arcata’s Anneli Macdonald posted her most impressive win of the season at Fortuna on Wednesday.

By Ray Hamill — This week’s honorees include a couple of dominating distance runners and a local high school dynasty that shows no signs of slowing down.

In cross country, Fortuna’s Collin Stockwell and Arcata’s Anneli Macdonald each posted a third victory in three league races at last week’s H-DNL meet in Fortuna and will be the favorites heading into Friday’s league championships.

And that’s good enough to make them our athletes of the week, while our team of the week award goes to the Arcata boys tennis team which has dominated once again this season and is unbeaten heading into this week’s league championships.

Fortuna’s Collin Stockwell

Collin Stockwell

Fortuna Cross Country, Senior

Stockwell has lived up to expectations and more in his senior season, winning last week’s race at Fortuna by almost two minutes.

Eureka’s Ian Bennett is expected to challenge Stockwell at this week’s league championships, but it will take a big effort to knock off Stockwell, who is closing out an impressive prep career in style.

Anneli Macdonald

Arcata Cross Country, Junior

There has been no stopping the Arcata Tigers in H-DNL girls cross country this season, and there has been no stopping Anneli Macdonald.

The Tigers junior has won all three races this season, edging her twin sister Mathilde on each occasion, and like Stockwell she will be tough to beat at this week’s big meet.

Arcata Boys Tennis

The Arcata boys closed out another impressive regular season this past weekend with a record of 7-0, setting the Tigers up for another big run at this week’s league championships.

The Tigers, who have dominated for several seasons, have dropped just three individual matches out of 31 played this season, with multiple players undefeated.

The league championships take place at McKinleyville High on Wednesday (Nos. 4-6 singles) and Saturday (Nos. 1-3 singles).
