Top four remain unchanged in H-DNL girls cross country

By Ray Hamill — The top four runners remained unchanged for the third straight week in H-DNL girls cross country on Wednesday.

Competing at Fortuna’s Rohner Park, Arcata sisters Anneli, Mathilde and Soquel Macdonald led the field once again, followed by Eureka’s Charlotte Leonard in fourth.

Anneli has won all three league races this season and will be the favorite going into next week’s league championships in Eureka.

On Wednesday the junior standout posted her most impressive win of the season on the hilly Fortuna course, finishing in a time of 20 minutes, 13.51 seconds, almost half a minute ahead of twin sister Mathilde in second (20:40.84).

Younger sister Soquel, a freshman, finished third in a time of 22:16.6, with the persistent Leonard, a sophomore, fourth in 23:15.84.

“The sisters from Arcata, my goodness, they’re super talented,” Fortuna head coach Daniel Holmes said.

Eureka had the fourth through sixth runners, including senior KyleeAnna Zink-Clinton (23:23.15) in fifth and freshman Miriam Mende (23:25.44) in sixth.

Mathilde Macdonald

Arcata’s Ai-Lan McGoldrick (seventh) and Cassidy Thorpe (eighth), Eureka’s Maggie Odell (ninth) and Fortuna’s Ella Owsley (10th) rounded out the top 10.

Arcata won the team event with 21 points, followed by Eureka (36) in second.

The 11th through 21st runners were Alauna Thompson (Arcata), Emma Martin (Arcata), Stasha Leonard (Eureka), Chloe Cox (Fortuna), Soffia Reyes (McKinleyville), Olivia Rink (McKinleyville), Bella Vigil (Eureka), Christina Smith (Eureka), Tania Olea (Fortuna), Hannah Jacobs (McKinleyville) and Annabell Young (Fortuna).

Arcata’s Ruth Godlin-Sullivan took first in the JV race, followed by teammate Sadie Breen in second and Eureka’s Sequoia Asby in third.
