Tennis Roundup — Tigers, Loggers both win in H-DNL action

The Arcata Tigers won on back-to-back days to keep their unbeaten run going in H-DNL boys tennis and improve to 6-0.

On Monday, the Tigers defeated St. Bernard’s 5-1, and followed that with a 6-1 win over North Coast Prep on Tuesday.

The Eureka Loggers also won on Tuesday, taking both matches against Fortuna.


Arcata 5, St. Bernard’s 1

At. No. 1 singles, Arcata’s Austin Costello-Anderson got the better of St. Bernard’s Nate Le, 6-1, 6-0, to lead another strong showing by the league frontrunners.

St. Bernard’s Marshall Harper won at No. 6 singles, 8-1, defeating Devon Shinn to prevent the sweep.

The No. 4 singles matchup was the closest of the day, with Arcata’s Sawyer Brodkorb edging Grant Omey, 8-6.

Aiden Waters (6-0, 6-0 over Griffin Vess), Finn McRae (9-0 over Owen Shanhan), and Micah Schiller (8-2 over Ken Tran) each also won for the Tigers.


Arcata 6, North Coast Prep 1

Owen Rau of North Coast Prep got the better of Arcata’s Costello-Anderson, 6-3, 1-6, 10-6, in the most exciting matchup of the day at No. 5 singles.

Aside from that, it was all Arcata, as the Tigers comfortably improved to 6-0 in H-DNL play.

At No. 1, Yasko Massias defeated Garrett Leach, 6-0, 6-1, while at No. 2, Tristan Washington got the better of Caleb Weiss, 6-2, 6-1.

Arcata’s Finn Murphy also won at No. 3 singles, defeating Gene Quinn, 6-1, 6-3, while teammate Mathias Severn got the better of Mateo Avcollie, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 4.

Aiden Waters (6-1, 6-0 over Abram Rau) and Finn McRae (8-2 over Jaxon Peaker) each also won for the Tigers.

Eureka 2, Fortuna 0

Tyler Petrusha turned in another strong performance for the Loggers, getting the better of Fortuna’s Aaron Soli, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 1 singles.

“Tyler overpowered his opponent and had some amazing clean point winning shots that showed how truly skilled he is as a player,” Eureka head coach Lilly Copeland said of her No. 1 player, who is enjoying a strong season. “His first serve was on today, untouchable most of the time.”

At No. 2 singles, Eureka’s Kishan Patel continued to impress with a 6-2 victory over James Hackleberg.

Next up, on Saturday Arcata hosts Fortuna, Eureka hosts Del Norte, St. Bernard’s hosts McKinleyville and Ferndale hosts NCP. 

Those matches will mark the end of the regular season.

The league tournament will take place at Arcata next week, with the Nos. 4-6 singles playing on Wednesday, followed by the Nos. 1-3 singles on Saturday, March 6.
