ATHLETES AND TEAM OF THE WEEK — Time to start recognizing some people again

Humboldt Sports is delighted to announce the return of our Athletes and Team of the Week for the first time in almost a year.

With community and high school sports on the path to a full return and several sports already cleared for competition, that means we’re seeing some standout individual and team performances again.

This week, the honors go to a former Arcata Tiger who has been making a big splash in the collegiate ranks, and a current McKinleyville senior who continues to dominate on the H-DNL golf courses.

While our Team of the Week award goes to a program whose dominance in cross country shows no signs of letting up any time soon.

Isabella Sundberg

McKinleyville Golf, Senior

Isabella Sundberg has been unstoppable in H-DNL play this year, winning all four events, three of them by double digits.

On Monday, the Panthers standout won at the Baywood Golf and Country Club, shooting a season-best 73 to push her further ahead in the season standings.

With just one event remaining, Sundberg is closing in on a season sweep.

Kieran McNulty

Cal Poly Swimming, Freshman

Former Arcata Tiger Kieran McNulty is enjoying a stellar start to his college career at Cal Poly.

This past week, McNulty, who got his start with the Humboldt Swim Club, won a pair of events at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation championships, becoming the first Mustang to do so in seven years.

McNulty placed first in both the 500-yard freestyle and the 1,650-yard freestyle.

Arcata Girls Cross Country

Few local teams have dominated in recent years the way the Arcata girls have in cross country, and that doesn’t look like changing any time soon.

Led by the dominating trio of sisters Anneli, Mathilde and Soquel Macdonald, the Tigers have comfortably won the opening two races of the season, with the Macdonalds placing one-two-three on each occasion.
