By Ray Hamill — There was a clear common thread among the most read high school sports stories of the 2019/20 school year here on HumboldtSports.com.

Actually two common threads — Del Norte and football.

The Warriors captivated our audience this school year, with the top six most read prep stories all involving Del Norte sports, five of them on the school’s football team.

The most read story of the year, as well as the fourth most read story of the year, both involved the controversy surrounding the state football game and whether the Warriors would be allowed to host.

In the end they were and their fans turned up in record numbers to support them.

Many of the other most read prep stories this past year involved St. Bernard’s run towards a state championship in football, as well as Del Norte basketball coach Marc Slayton’s historic achievement, when he became the first coach to land both a boys and girls Dick Niclai title, winning with the boys this year after previously doing so with the Del Norte girls.

Fortuna’s big NCS win in boys soccer and the Del Norte boys’ success on the basketball court also were among the leading stories of 2019/20, along with Eureka’s Josiah Graham and Miles Meynell announcing where they will play college football, and a certain Bosnian Bear at Mack High.
