By Ray Hamill — It was one of the most remarkable penalty shootouts you’ll ever see, with the two goalkeepers combining to save nine of the 14 attempts they faced and not a single shot off target.

And that was a fitting way to end a thrilling NCS championship soccer game at Fortuna High on Friday night, one which saw the home team win a third Division-I title in four years with a 3-2 shootout win after a 0-0 tie through regulation and two overtimes.

There were many heroes on the night for the victorious Huskies, but none more so than sophomore goalie Alonso Garcia who remarkably saved five of the seven penalties he faced in the shootout, after making an even more outstanding save off a long range shot heading into the corner of the goal in the final minute of the first overtime period.

His fourth penalty save in particular was championship-winning caliber.

“My goalkeeper, that’s a story in itself,” a delighted Fortuna head coach Daniel Holmes said afterwards, shaking his head at a loss for words to describe Garcia’s heroics.

Watch all five of Garcia’s saves here, and the Fortuna celebrations after the final stop.

  1. Sorry, but those penalty kicks were all gross, horrid, terrible placements…each kick was at the goalkeeper…instead of just inside the posts…

What was International thinking…that FHS GK was diving left or right…wow, poor execution when it counted the most…

…and boy, the FHS GK capitalized hugely…looked very much comfortable…

Great pictures again by Jose “can you see” Quezada…former ref himself to boot…

Shout out to video suppliers too.
