Ray Hamill/HumboldtSports.com – Eureka’s Tyce Mullins in action against Fortuna on Friday.

By Ray Hamill — The accolades continue for Eureka’s Tyce Mullins, who this week has been named the Cal-Hi Sports NorCal Defensive Player of the Week.

The senior linebacker has been a handful for opponents all year and leads the team with 106 tackles, including 21 for a loss.

He has been a major reason the dominating Loggers just completed their second consecutive undefeated season, closing out 10-0 with a victory at Fortuna on Friday night.

And now he’s being recognized outside the area for his achievements.

“Last week, in a 42-13 win over neighboring Humboldt-Del Norte Big 4 League rival Fortuna, the 6-foot-1, 210-pound Loggers’ middle linebacker was all over the place,” Cal-Hi Sports’ Harold Abend wrote in his article naming Mullins the defensive player of the week.

And it’s not just his contributions on defense that have gaining attention, with the senior also making some noise at tight end, where he has 10 receptions on the season, six of them going for touchdowns.

“Mullins is also one of the leading targets for quarterback Cruz Montana, and in fact caught his sixth touchdown pass of the season, a 56-yarder on his one reception in the game,” Abend wrote.

Mullins was also named this week’s Humboldt Sports Athlete of the Week.

The Loggers, who claimed a second straight league title this season, are the No. 2 seed for the North Coast Section Division-III playoffs, and will have a bye this weekend before opening at home against either De Anza or Tennyson next week.
