The South Fork girls are beginning to find their groove at an opportune time.

On Thursday afternoon, the Cubs won a non-league softball game against Laytonville, 11-1, which should give them some momentum heading into the postseason.

Heading into Friday’s crucial Little 4 doubleheader at Ferndale, the South Fork girls are third in the conference standings and on track to earn the L4’s No. 3 seed for the upcoming H-DNL Charles Lakin tournament.

They are also ranked No. 3 in North Coast Section Division 6, and Thursday’s comprehensive win over the D-5 Warriors will help their cause.

So too will the team’s improved defense and presence at the plate.

“We are finally cutting down on errors and swinging the bat,” head coach Lisa Todd said.

Several players stepped up in Thursday’s win in the absence of influential senior and team captain Cloe McConnell, who missed the game through injury.

Freshman Mackenzie Coleman got the win in the pitcher’s circle, allowing one walk and striking out four.

Junior Raevyn Reveles led the way at the plate and was 3-for-4 with a triple, while senior Caidence Young and freshman Anora Blackwell each went 2-for-3.

Young also had a walk and Blackwell also reached base on a hit by pitch.

Several South Fork players were disciplined at the plate.

Coleman and sophomores Molly Perkins and Makenzie Brewer each also reached base three times and all three finished 1-for-2 with a pair of walks.

After Friday’s doubleheader, the Cubs will close out conference play with a doubleheader against Hoopa next week.
