On-campus protests force change of venue for softball finales

By Ray Hamill — This week’s protests at Cal Poly Humboldt and the campus closure has forced a switch in venue for the weekend softball games.

The Lumberjacks will close out the regular season with a four-game series against Cal State San Bernardino on Friday and Saturday.

But instead of playing on their own field on campus, the games will now take place at the Bear River Casino Resort sports field.

Pro-Palestine protests are ongoing on campus and protestors continue to occupy Siemens Hall, plus another building at Cal Poly Humboldt.

The university announced on Wednesday that the campus will be closed through the weekend, and work and instruction will continue to be remote.

According to a press release, “The University is making various contingency plans, including possibly keeping campus closed beyond that.

“The safety, health, and wellbeing of our students is paramount as the situation has become increasingly complex.”

The Humboldt softball team remains in the chase for a California Collegiate Athletic Association tournament berth heading into the final weekend of the regular season.

The Jacks are 13-15 in conference and two wins out of the sixth and final tournament spot.

San Bernardino is 17-13 in the CCAA.

Friday’s doubleheader starts at 1 p.m. and Saturday’s doubleheader gets under way at 11 a.m.
