Red-hot Corsairs have one of the longest winning streaks in state

The Corsairs have turned things around after a slow start and are now one of the hottest teams in the state.

On Saturday night, the College of the Redwoods men’s basketball team stretched its winning streak to seven straight games with an 84-75 win over Contra Costa in Eureka.

The winning streak is the fourth longest in the state and after a 1-5 start to the campaign, the Corsairs are now 8-5

Saturday’s game was an entertaining battle with both offenses playing well.

“In that first half we saw some of the best offense we’ve seen all year,” CR head coach Ryan Bisio said. “The ball was popping and the guys really committed to their off-ball movement, which provided more musicality for our shot selection.”

The Neff brothers led the way for the Corsairs.

Trey Neff finished with a team-high 21 points, including 18 in the second half, while Ty Neff had 19 points and helped set the early tone with 16 in the first half.

“Ty Neff’s explosion in the first half injected all of us with confidence,” Bisio added. “He was so aggressive and assured and put a lot of heat on the rim.”

Jett Cheong added 15 points in the win, while Mason Railsback finished with 12 points.

Redwoods led 42-34 at halftime and nailed 13 3-pointers, while Contra Costa hit 12 3s.

CR also had 22 assists.

“This was a good junior college basketball game,” Bisio said. “Both teams played well and the game had a great flow to it. The defenses weren’t as poor as the final score indicate either.”

The CR players certainly appear to be playing with some confidence and building plenty of momentum ahead of conference play, which will see them compete for an historic fourth straight Golden Valley Conference championship.

“Day by day we’re learning more and more about how to play together, and also how to coach these guys,” Bisio said. “I’d venture to say we experienced more growth this week than any other.

“They’re revealing more of their soul and I’m proud of them for that.”

Mikey Pierce scored a game-high 31 points for Contra Costa.

The Corsairs will try to keep their winning streak going when they play at the Santa Rosa tournament this week, opening against Foothill (6-5) on Thursday at 4 p.m.
