By Ray Hamill — The Big 5 softball championship remains in the balance after an Arcata/Del Norte doubleheader was postponed for the second time on Monday because of field conditions in Crescent City.

Those games will now take place on Wednesday and the host Warriors need one win to secure the conference championship outright, with both McKinleyville and Arcata still in the mix with an outside shot at a co-championship.

The Del Norte girls are 8-2 in conference play with the two games remaining, while both the Huskies and Panthers are 8-4 with their conference schedule completed.

If the Tigers can upset the odds and sweep in Del Norte, them there would be a three-way tie for the championship.

However, while the destination of this year’s Big 5 pennant remains in the balance, the Charles Lakin tournament schedule and seedings have been finalized.

Regardless of what happens in their conference finales, the Del Norte girls are guaranteed a top seed for this week’s postseason tournament, which gets under way on Tuesday and runs through Friday.

The Warriors receive the top seed courtesy of a tiebreaker after taking two of three Big 5 games against both McKinleyville and Fortuna.

Fortuna is seeded No. 2 after taking two of three conference games against McKinleyville, with the Panthers No. 3.

The action gets under way at the Arcata Sports Complex with two games on Tuesday.

McKinleyville plays Little 4 No. 2 seed Hoopa at 5 p.m., followed by Fortuna and Little 4 No. 3 seed Ferndale at 7 p.m.

The winner of the Hoopa/McKinleyville game will play Del Norte in the first of Thursday’s semifinals at 5 p.m., followed by L4 No. 1 seed St. Bernard’s against the winner of the Ferndale/Fortuna game at 7 p.m.

The McKinleyville Panthers will begin tournament play on Thursday.

Tanner Pidgeon and the Wildcats will play either Eureka or South Fork on Thursday.

Friday’s championship game will take place at 5 p.m.

The Charles Lakin baseball tournament will also be played this week, at the Arcata Ball Park.

The action gets under way on Tuesday, with Big 5 No. 2 Eureka and Little 4 No. 3 South Fork playing at 4 p.m., followed by L4 No. 2 St. Bernard’s and B5 No. 3 Fortuna at 7 p.m.

Conference champions Ferndale and McKinleyville both receive an opening-round bye and will open tournament play in Thursday’s semifinals.

Ferndale plays the winner of the Eureka/South Fork game at 4 p.m., followed by McKinleyville and the winner of the St. Bernard’s/Fortuna game at 7 p.m.

Friday’s championship game takes place at 7 p.m.
