A pair of Eureka seniors haven’t wasted any time finding a new home.

Just a few days after their high school careers officially ended in the North Coast Section playoffs, seniors Garrett Levitt and Jesse Vasquez have committed to play baseball for College of the Redwoods next year.

The talented Eureka duo signed their letters of intent at CR on Monday.

Both players played key roles on a competitive Eureka team this spring, as the Loggers pushed McKinleyville all the way to the final day in the race for the Big 5 championship and also made it to the Charles Lakin Tournament final.

In addition to their impressive campaigns at the plate — they each were among the the team’s top five batters — Levitt and Vasquez also played key leadership roles, something that CR head coach John Downey appreciates about both players.

“Not only are they great baseball players, they’re great people,” Downey said. “Both have shown excellent leadership skills in their program, and their coaching staff at EHS can’t stop saying great things, and we agree.”

Vasquez averaged .375 at the plate in 15 games this spring, while Levitt hit .365 with 13 RBIs and also displayed some power with four home runs and five doubles.

His four home runs were second on the team to Ty Crawford’s five.

CR’s recruitment of the two local standouts will give the program a boost after a disappointing spring season.

“We’re super excited to welcome both Jesse and Garrett to College of the Redwoods,” Downey said. “They’re both dynamic outfielders that can play multiple spots and do great things at the plate.”

The CR coach also believes that both Vasquez and Levitt are the type of character players he wants at the local community college.

“They do a great job at EHS of teaching these young athletes great things on and off the field,” the CR coach added. “They have fantastic families and we can’t be more excited for them to represent their local community here at CR. They’re going to do great things.”
