It was a good weekend for the College of the Redwoods baseball and softball teams as they each get set to close out the season later this week.

After struggling for much of the year, the Redwoods baseball team hosted Siskiyous at Belotti Field on Friday and Saturday and split with the Eagles, taking game one 4-3 before dropping game two 8-4.

The CR women were also in action, playing six games in four days and winning four of them.

After losing twice at Siskiyous on Friday by scores of 2-1 and 5-3, Redwoods swept a doubleheader at Yuba the following day, winning 19-3 and 12-2.

They capped a busy few days with a pair of wins at Butte on Monday winning 6-3 and 7-2.

The Redwoods women are now 6-12 in the Golden Valley Conference and 13-20-1 overall.

They will close out the season with a home doubleheader against Yuba on Wednesday afternoon, with game one set for noon.

The Cal Poly Humboldt softball team was also in action over the weekend, playing a four-game CCAA series at Cal State San Marcos and losing all four games to the No. 3 team in the nation.

The Jacks fell 3-0, 7-1, 4-1 and 10-2 in six innings.

With the losses, the CPH women dropped to 10-12 in conference and 19-24 overall.

They will be back in action when they host Chico State in a four-game series this coming weekend, including a pair of games on Friday, with game one set for 1 p.m.

The CR men, meanwhile, scored the winning run in their opening game against Siskiyous in the bottom of the eighth to break a 3-3 tie in what was a competitive and back-and-forth game.

“Great to see these guys continue to grow and pull out a W in a thriller of a game one,” CR head coach John Downey said.

Kamole Gilliland led the way at the plate in the victory, finishing 3-for-4 with two doubles, an RBI and a run, as the home team scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 3-1 lead.

The visitors, however, would tie things up with a pair runs in the top of the seventh to make for an exciing finish.

But CR would have the final say, pulling ahead again on a Hunter Stockinger base hit the following inning.

Stockinger finished 1-for-1 with two RBIs and two walks.

Tristen Valenzuela pitched even solid innings for the win on the mound, allowing eight hits and three walks and striking out three.

Quinton Marshall and Evan Fraser each pitched a scoreless inning in relief.

Carson Fleming and Ryan Naillon each also had a double in the win, while Tyson Bragg and Xavier La Pena each also had a base hit to round out an eight-hit team performance.

Game two wasn’t as competitive, with the visitors opening up an eight-run lead before Redwoods got on the board with four runs in the bottom of the ninth.

“Not a very exciting week offensively as we got out of our approach at times,” Downey said. “But when we strung together better ABs we saw results.”

Drew Franklin got the start on the hill on Saturday and took the loss.

The former Fortuna Husky pitched seven innings and allowed 11 hits and a walk while striking out one.

Stockinger finished 2-for-3 to lead a five-hit team performance, while Fleming added a triple and Gilliland and Naillon each also had a base hit.

The CR men, who are 3-20 in conference and 5-31 overall, will close out the season with two games against Butte at Belotti Field on Thursday (1 p.m.) and Friday (11 a.m.) and Downey wants his team to finish strong.

“With one week left, the message is simple,” he said. “We have to finish with our best effort and attitude as we all continue to fight for something.

“We will continue to prepare our best for this weekend and give our sophomores one last shot at home.”
