Mack girls explode for seven home runs in doubleheader sweep

Seniors Liana Stumpf and Mckennah Sargent each hit two home runs on Saturday, as the Panthers exploded for seven home runs in a doubleheader sweep at Arcata.

The McKinleyville girls took the opener 16-8 and followed that with an 18-5 win in five innings in game two to remain atop the Big 5 standings at the halfway stage.

Stumpf and Sargent had a home run in each game, while teammates Josie Provolt-Dowd, Leili Guerrero and Cabella Carper each also hit a home run in game one.

With the two wins, McKinleyville improved to 5-1 in conference play and 10-4 overall, while Arcata dropped to 0-6 and 6-9.

But game one was competitive until late and just two runs separated the two teams going into the sixth inning.

Carper had a huge game at the plate, finishing 4-for-5 with the home run and a double, while Sargent and Provolt-Dowd each had three hits and also hit doubles to go with their home runs.

Stumpf added two hits in a 14-hit team performance.

Sargent got the win in the circle, pitching all seven innings and giving up six hits and two walks while striking out eight.

The McKinleyville girls continued to hit the ball well in game two, scoring at least three runs in all five innings and ending the game early with six runs in the top of the fifth.

Sargent continued to impress both at the plate and in the circle, finishing with four more hits and getting the win in relief.

The senior threw four innings and gave up just three hits and one walk while striking out five.

She finished 4-for-5 at the plate and added another double in addition to her home run.

For the day, the outstanding senior was 7-for-9 with two home runs, two doubles, six RBIs and five runs.

Four of her teammates also had multiple hits in a 16-hit team performance in game two, including Provolt-Dowd (3-for-4 with an RBI), Carper (2-for-5 with a triple and three RBIs), Stumpf (2-for-4 with a home run and an RBI), and Guerrero (2-for-4 with three RBIs).

Avery Bartoo also had a double in the win.

No stats from either game were immediately available for the Tigers.
