Can anyone in the H-DNL stop the Tigers after their big week?

By Ray Hamill — The Arcata Tigers are beginning to peak at an opportune time.

On Wednesday night, they took control of the race for this year’s Big 5 with a statement win over Eureka, just four days after a thrilling victory at St. Bernard’s in a matchup that has become the best rivalry in H-DNL girls basketball in recent years.

With their victory over Eureka, the Tigers improved to 4-0 in the Big 5 (12-3 overall) and took over sole possession of top spot in the standings.

Head coach Charlie Espinoza and his players will tell you the job is only half completed with four conference games remaining, including a potential Big 5 decider at Eureka to close out the regular season early next month.

But the manner in which they have thoroughly dominated their first four conference opponents suggests they’ll take some stopping down the stretch.

In the first half of conference play, the Arcata girls have won their games by an average of 25.5 points, with all four wins coming by at least 15 points.

That impressive run included a 38-point win over McKinleyville, a 30-point win over Fortuna, Wednesday’s 19-point victory over Eureka and a 15-point win at Del Norte, which is considered the hardest gymnasium to play in for opposing teams.

Wednesday’s win was also the team’s sixth straight and lifted them to No. 11 overall in the North Coast Section.

They are also ranked No. 3 in NCS Division 3, trailing only Acalanes and Bishop O’Dowd, who are Nos. 6 and 7 overall in the section, respectively.

The play of twin sisters and reigning Big 5 MVPs Tae and Mae Wolford has been instrumental in Arcata’s impressive season thus far, but the emergence of several of their teammates this winter — a group that includes sophomores Anevay Gruetzmacher, Colby Eisner and Betty Miles, junior Kyla Kinyon and seniors Mia Cueto and Syriah George, among others — has also played a key role in the team’s success.

Espinoza is also making a case for H-DNL coach of the year honors while overseeing a squad that has grown in stature as the campaign has progressed.

They got over the hump with a crucial win at St. Bernard’s on Saturday, beating a Crusaders team that has had their number in recent years.

Twelve months ago, the Tigers secured a breakthrough conference title — their first since 2018 — but suffered a heartbreaking loss to SB in the Dick Niclai final, less than 12 months after they suffered a heartbreaking loss to the Crusaders in the 2024 all-local Division-4 NorCal championship game at College of the Redwoods.

Anyone who was on hand for last weekend’s epic showdown at St. Bernard’s — or any of the recent games between them — will be hoping to see these two rivals face off again in this year’s Niclai final, and there’s every reason to suggest it could happen.

Without getting ahead of ourselves, a victory for the Tigers in this year’s Niclai tournament would be the first for the program since they won the last of their record six straight tournament championships in 2018.

There are still plenty of twists and turns to navigate this winter, but judging by the week they had there’s every reason to expect the Tigers could be celebrating a tournament championship next month.

For now, they’ll focus on a tricky Friday night showdown against a Del Norte team that gave them their biggest challenge in the first round of conference play, before turning their attention to upcoming matchups against Fortuna, McKinleyville and Eureka.

But after the week they had, Arcata fans have every reason to feel good about where their team is headed.

  1. Great article by Ray Hamill. I confess I am biased by the fact that my granddaughter, Betty, is a team member of the Arcata Tigers and Ray Hamill’s report spoke so glowingly about the Arcata Tigers and their chances of winning the big prize. Go ‘Betty’! ‘Go Tigers’!
