The Eureka Loggers capped a successful two-day road trip with a victory at Shasta on Saturday, stretching their winning streak to four straight games.
One day after beating University Prep 45-29, the Eureka girls dominated Shasta 55-18.
Also in action on Saturday, the St. Bernard’s girls traveled to Weaverville to play Trinity and came away with a 54-50 win.
Madelyn Fazio led the way for the Loggers against the Wolves and finished with a game-high 17 points, including five 3-pointers.
Fazio came within one point of matching Shasta’s game total, as the Eureka defense tied its season-best in points allowed, having also given up just 18 points against Corning earlier in the campaign.
“We did really well rebounding and not giving up second-chance points,” Eureka head coach Cliff Napoleon said. “The girls are starting to come together and trust each other. Hopefully we’ll continue to get better with each passing game.”
Nashya Williams also impressed in Saturday’s win, adding 12 points, while Violla Kingsang finished with 11 points and Tiarah Maualuga had nine points.
With the two weekend wins, the Loggers improved to 12-4.
They will return to conference play next week when they travel to play Del Norte on Wednesday.
St. Bernard’s 54, Trinity 50
The Crusaders displayed a lot of character on Saturday, rallying from a 10-point deficit on the way to a four-point victory over a good Trinity team in non-conference action.
And they did it without leading scorer Samantha Sundberg, who missed the game for personal reasons.
In her absence, sophomore point guard Carli Baum had a big game and played a key role in the second-half comeback, finishing with 22 points, including 14 in the second half, as well as nine rebounds, seven steals and six assists.
“The team showed grit, toughness, togetherness and pride when their backs were against the wall,” said head coach Matt Tomlin, whose team also defeated Ferndale in its conference opener on Friday night. “I could not be prouder of these ladies for this amazing victory.”
Alyssa Boham, CJ Figas, Tally Williams and Macie Wantt all made some big baskets in the second half to help key the comeback.
Boham finished 12 points, while Figas and Wantt each had seven points and Williams chipped in six.
Tomlin also praised the play of Sariah Vainuku, whose “amazing defense and tough rebounding” contributed to the comeback.
With the win, which was their eighth in their last nine games, the Crusaders improved to 12-4.
Trinity dropped to 9-8.
Next up, the Crusaders will host South Fork in a Little 4 showdown on Friday.
