
Cal Poly Humboldt Athletics – The Jacks celebrate their walk-off win over Dominguez Hills on Friday.
The Cal Poly Humboldt and College of the Redwoods softball teams played four conference games each over the weekend with mixed results.
The Humboldt women welcomed Cal State Dominguez Hills to Arcata for a four-game series and the Jacks’ home openers, and they took three of the four games including an exciting walk-off win on Friday.
The CR women traveled for their conference openers, playing two games at Lassen on Friday and two at Feather River on Saturday and dropping all four games.
The CR women fell 9-0 and 11-0 to Lassen on Friday, before losing 15-3 and 9-3 at Feather River the following day.
With the four loses, Redwoods dropped to 0-4 in the Golden Valley Conference and 7-12-1 overall.
The CPH women improved to 4-4 in the CCAA and 13-16 overall.
After dropping three of four games in their conference-opening series at San Francisco State the previous weekend, the Jacks opened against the Toros with 6-5 and 9-5 victories on Friday.
They followed that with a 7-4 loss on Saturday, before responding to take the series with a 5-4 win later in the day.
After opening the season with 25 straight road games, the Jacks enjoyed an exciting one-run win in their home opener on Friday.
The ‘Jacks erased a late deficit on the way to the victory, scoring three runs in the bottom of the seventh to walk off the Toros.
Trailing 5-3 entering their final at-bats, Humboldt capitalized on timely hitting.
Shelby Shanks drove in a run with an RBI single to cut the deficit to one before Marissa Brody delivered a two-RBI, walk-off single to center field that sealed the comeback victory.
“It was a great home opener for us,” Jacks head coach Megan Corriea said. “After spending so much time on the road, it was exciting to finally play in front of our fans and the team responded really well.
“We showed a lot of fight in game one and then came out strong in game two.”
Next up, the Jacks will play a four-game conference series at Cal State East Bay this weekend.
They open with two games on Friday, with game one set for 1 p.m.
For CR, Kailey Wheelock finished 2-for-3 with a home run in game one at Feather River on Saturday, while former McKinleyville Panther Bailey Box also had two hits, finishing 2-for-2 and scoring a run.
Jordyn Hattery added a double for the visitors.
In game two, lead-off hitter Grace Turgeon finished 2-for-3 with a run to lead the way at the plate for the visitors, while Audrey Phillips had a home run and drove in two runs.
Hattery, Box and Mackenzie Dean each also had a base hit to round out a six-hit team performance.
The Redwoods women will be back on the North Coast this weekend, hosting conference doubleheaders against Siskiyous on Friday and Butte on Saturday at the Bear River Casino sports complex.
Game one is set for noon on both days.
