Former Arcata Tiger Addison Wingate scored a game-high 19 points for the College of the Redwoods women on Saturday, but it was the visiting Butte Roadrunners who took the victory.

The Butte women outscored the home team in all four quarters on the way to the 73-56 win, with five different players scoring eight or more points in a balanced team performance.

The Redwoods women started slow and trailed by nine (25-16) after the opening quarter, and they went into the break down by 12.

However, despite the loss CR head coach Bree Northern was happy with her players’ effort as they continued to battle hard the entire way.

“I thought we played well today against Butte,” Northern said. “We started off the game a little slower than what I would have liked, but we were able to continue fighting and kept it close.

“Butte did a great job defending us and we struggled to hit from 3.”

With the loss, the CR women dropped to 1-1 in conference play and 9-9 overall, while the Roadrunners improved to 2-0 in the GVC and into a two-way tie with Siskiyous for the conference lead.

The Roadrunners, who have won nine of their last 10 games, are now 14-4 on the season.

In addition to Wingate’s big afternoon, CR’s Itzel Torres also had a good game and finished with 17 points, including three 3-pointers, while Mayleah Jackson added 13 points, including a 6-for-6 effort from the free-throw line.

It wasn’t just the offense from those players that impressed the coach.

“Itzel Torres, Addison Wingate and Mayleah Jackson had great effort (today) both offensively and defensively,” Northern said. “They had some really big moments that kept us in the game.”

Paityn Erlenbush chipped in five points in the loss.

Next up, the CR women will host Siskiyous next Saturday at 1 p.m.
