The College of the Redwoods women got their conference campaign off to a winning start at Shasta on Wednesday night.

Redwoods overcame a slow start and the absence of two starters on the way to a 57-51 win.

The always impressive Nora Talty had another big game in the victory and posted a double-double, finishing with 16 points and 11 rebounds, as well as five assists.

“We got off to a slow start but were able to eventually get in a rhythm,” CR head coach Bree Northern said. “We shared the ball extremely well, hit shots and ultimately stayed composed during the tense moments of the game.”

In addition to Talty’s big night, CR’s Itzel Torres continued to impress and finished with 14 points, four assists and three rebounds, while former Fortuna Husky Kalie Chittenden added nine points.

Redwoods played without influential starters Mia Hoogendoorn and Mayleah Jackson, but their teammates picked up the slack in their absence.

“We had two starters out for the game tonight, but many people stepped up and played great,” Northern added.

Including former South Fork Cub Caidence Young, who finished with seven points, four rebounds and three steals.

With the win, which was their third in four games, the CR women improved to 1-0 in the Golden Valley Conference and 9-8 overall.

It was the second time this season that the Redwoods women matched up against a team featuring multiple former H-DNL players.

Eureka’s Mallorie Beauchamp, Fortuna’s Maleesa Miles and Del Norte’s Jacalyn Gorbet all saw action for the home team during the game.

Gorbet finished with five points, while Beauchamp added four points and Miles had one.

With the loss, the Knights dropped to 0-1 and 6-11.

Next up, the Redwoods women will continue conference play when they host Butte on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
