Several local players enjoyed their return to the North Coast  over there weekend, as Shasta College baseball swept a three-game conference series against College of the Redwoods.

Six former H-DNL players feature for the Knights this spring and all six made an impact on their return home, none more so that Arcata’s Will Mager.

Mager hit successfully in all three games as the Knights won 23-5, 10-4 and 6-1.

With the three wins, Shasta improved to 6-1 in the Golden Valley Conference and 8-12 overall, while CR dropped to 0-8 and 2-19.

Mager, a sophomore who is averaging .257 at the plate, got his weekend started with a couple of base hits in the series opener on Friday, finishing 2-for-5 with a double, two RBIs and two runs.

Three other former H-DNL players — Fortuna’s Rylan Lommori and Daniel Osborne and Del Norte’s Aidan Rice — also made some noise at the plate in that win.

Rice, a freshman who helped lead the Del Norte Warriors to a Big 5 title a year ago, finished 1-for-2 with a double, three RBIs and a run.

Osborne, who is in his second year playing for the Knights, went 2-for-5 with two RBIs and a run, while Lommori scored twice.

Former McKinleyville Panther Tyson Bragg, who last week signed his letter off intent to play at New Mexico Highlands next year, had a good game for the home team, finishing 2-for-5 with two RBIs, two runs and two stolen bases.

The Knights broke open a tight game with six runs in the top of the fourth and scored runs in seven of the nine innings.

Saturday’s opening game was a little closer.

CR led 4-3 early, but the Knights would score single runs in each of the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh innings to gradually take control.

Mager was the only local player to have a hit in the win, finishing 1-for-3 with an RBI, a run and two walks.

CR catcher Addisson Guber had a big day at the plate in the loss, finishing 4-for-5 with a double and a run, while Bragg was 1-for-5 and scored a run.

Lommori pitched one hitless inning in relief for the visitors, allowing one walk and striking out two.

Another Fortuna High graduate, Drew Franklin, got the start on the hill for CR.

The sophomore allowed 12 hits and one walk in 6.2 innings and struck out two.

Mager capped a good weekend for the visitors by going 1-for-3 in the series finale later on Saturday.

He also was walked once and scored a run.

Bragg also continued his impressive weekend at the plate and finished 1-for-4 with a triple.

Del Norte’s Cole Blackburn and Hoopa’s Lyle McKinnon both saw time on the mound for the visitors.

Blackburn got the start and threw five strong innings for the win.

The Del Norte graduate, who is in his second season with the Knights, allowed just one run on three hits and a walk and struck out four.

McKinnon threw one hitless inning in relief and walked one batter.

Next up, Redwoods travels to play a three-game series at Siskiyous on Friday and Saturday, while Shasta travels to play a three-game series at Butte.
