The St. Bernard’s Crusaders made it seven straight wins to close out 2025 with a second victory over McKinleyville in boys basketball action over the weekend.
Just two weeks after getting the better of their H-DNL rivals in the Mt. Shasta tournament championship game, the SB boys hosted the Panthers on Saturday and won 85-73 in front of a packed house.
With the victory, they improved to 9-1
“It was encouraging to see the gym so packed on Christmas break,” St. Bernard’s head coach Pat Shanahan said. “Mack brought a great crowd and a scoring offense. We had a hard time slowing them down.”
The loss dropped the Panthers to 9-4.
“Great job (by) coach Shanahan and his boys,” McKinleyville head coach Chris Davis said. “They were the tougher team tonight, mentally and physically, and did a lot of the little things we need to do a lot better to take our next step.
“We’re a talented group, but until we start owning up to our mistakes and learning from them, we’re going to hit a wall in our potential.”
The Crusaders, who are ranked No. 9 overall in the North Coast Section, according to MaxPreps, were led by junior Garrett Shanahan, who had a double-double.
Shanahan finished with 25 points, 11 rebounds and six assists, while teammate Liam Dyer also continued to make a big impact and added 25 points, six rebounds and three assists.
“The first half Garrett was a playmaker offensively, getting to the rim and also hitting outside,” Pat Shanahan said. “Liam in the second half took over and confidently got to his spots for high-percentage shots and also to get his teammates opportunities.”
Prince Latimer added 15 points and eight rebounds for a St. Bernard’s team that has established itself as the team to beat in the H-DNL with conference play set to tip off next week.
“Prince cut through their defense and attacked gaps with a purpose,” Pat Shanahan added. “He is hard to stop when he’s coming downhill with the ball in his hands.”

Henry Turner scored a team-high 19 points for the Panthers, while Neil Moon added 15 points and Bode Douglass chipped in 11 as he continues his impressive return from a serious injury suffered last spring.
“Bode took a great step tonight in regaining his confidence coming back from injury,” Davis said of the senior team leader. “He made some strong takes to the rack, shot from the perimeter with confidence and had a couple great looks for assists through traffic.
“Was really good to see him to start to look like himself more and more.”
Carson Costa added nine points for the Crusaders, while Trenten Hagler chipped in eight point.
“Carson’s off-ball cutting is next level,” Pat Shanahan said. “He is such a significant threat from the outside, but he is able to complement that with some cuts to keep teams honest.
“Trenten was outstanding tonight once again. His understanding of spacing on the basketball court is advanced for his young age.”
Senior Tyler Hinrichs also impressed his coaches.
“Tyler played a smart physical game,” Pat Shanahan said. “He contributes greatly to our success.”
Next up, the Crusaders will travel for the Nike TOC in Phoenix, Arizona, which tips off on Thursday, while the Panthers will play at Marin Academy on Friday at 2 p.m.
