Several local boys basketball teams were in action at various tournaments on Saturday, including the McKinleyville Panthers, who lost in the final of their Tip-Off Classic.
The Panthers faced off against Cardinal Newman in the decider and fell 55-49.
The loss was the first of the season for the 4-1 Mack boys.
Also in action on Saturday, Del Norte defeated Eureka in the championship game at the Yreka tournament by a score of 59-55 in overtime, while a new-look and young Arcata team lost to Enterprise at the Harlan Carter tournament in Redding.

The Hoopa Warriors also were in action on Saturday and lost on a buzzer beater for the second time in three days at the Durham tournament, falling 44-42 to Mt. Shasta.
The St. Bernard’s boys were in action at the Montgomery tournament and fell 52-50 to Campolindo in the championship game.
“This early part of the season is about discovery,” St. Bernard’s head coach Pat Shanahan said. “The boys and coaches are identifying what works and what doesn’t and having fun while doing it.”
Carson Costa had another big game for the Crusaders and has hit the ground running this season, finishing with a team-high 23 points in the loss, as well as pulling down six rebounds, while teammate Prince Latimer added 11 points and three assists.
“Carson continued to want the ball and was aggressive every time he touched it,” Shanahan said “Prince created many opportunities for the team with his ball handling and sensational passing.”
Liam Dyer also had a good all-around game and finished with six points, nine rebounds and five assists, while Garrett Shanahan had 10 rebounds and eight points and Tyler Hinrichs finished with 10 boards.
“Liam was a smooth force out there seeing the court and evaluating his options,” the head coach said. “Tyler and Garrett coming off the football season and finding their legs so quickly was impressive. Their timing improved each game.”
Luke Brunton also impressed for the 2-1 Crusaders and gave the team some physical minutes down the stretch.
“We are disappointed with the loss in the championship game to a strong program in Campolindo,” Pat Shanahan added. “But come Monday we will continue to build off of this experience.
“So proud of the boys’ effort this weekend.”

An entertaining Hoopa boys team continued to evolve with the return of Inker McCovey as head coach, with mixed results at the Durham tournament this week.
After opening with a 53-52 loss to the tournament hosts on Thursday, the Warriors bounced back with a two-point win on Friday, before closing out tournament play with another buzzer-beating loss on Saturday.
“We missed several layups. We were just not on our game,” McCovey said after Saturday’s game. “I’ll take the responsibility for losing. We’re still playing pretty decent. We just need to clean up some things.”
The Warriors are now 3-3 as they continue to prepare for league play in the new year with some tough pre-league opponents.
“We want to play good teams and we are playing good teams,” the head coach said. “And it will make us better for league.”

It was another weekend of gaining some valuable experience for a new-look Arcata boys team at the Harlan Carter tournament.
After opening tournament play with a 75-70 loss to University Prep on Thursday, the Tigers responded with a nine-point overtime win over Shasta on Friday night, before closing out the weekend with a loss to Enterprise on Saturday.
Friday’s performance was particularly impressive for a team that has just two players with any real varsity experience, one of whom (Jack Luh) is sidelined with an injury right now.
Two of Luh’s teammates are also sidelined through injury at the moment, and three others fouled out late in the Shasta game, including team leader Luke Lemke.
But the Tigers found a way to win and took a big step forward with the performance.
“It was a really good team win for us,” head coach Kellen Maynard said. “Shasta was very physical, but we played good defensively.
“We struggled at times offensively, but with six players down late in the game, it was an absolute team win.”
Lemke finished with 27 points before fouling out in overtime, while Sebastian Baker added 10 points.
“It was a big confidence boost for the team, to be in a position like that and get a win against a good team like Shasta,” Maynard added.
Lemke continued to impress against Enterprise and finished with 13 points, while Baker chipped in nine points.
“We had too many turnovers and too much indecision,” Maynard said of Saturday’s performance. “And we were not good offensively. We just didn’t make the best decisions.”
Trailing 30-16 at halftime, the Tigers cut the deficit to five with a 9-0 run to start the third quarter.
A buzzer beater at the end of the period, however, put Enterprise up 13 and the gap would widen further in the fourth quarter.
The Tigers are now 3-4, but Maynard is seeing some improvement game to game.
“For as young and inexperienced as we are, I could see the growth and confidence in these guys more and more in each game,” the coach added. “In two weeks, we’ve really grown quite a bit.”
