By Ray Hamill — It was another good day at the office for the Ferndale Wildcats on Saturday, as they kept their amazing run going with a 67-0 win over Hoopa at Coach Carlson Wildcat Field.

And with just two games remaining in the regular season, the excitement is building as the pursuit of history continues.

The Wildcats have now incredibly outscored their first eight opponents of the year by a combined 517-0, as they look to close out the regular season without allowing a single point.

Once again, there were several standouts for the home team, which features incredible depth at the skill positions.

And that was on full display against Hoopa, as seven different players combined for the 10 team touchdowns, including five on offense, three on special teams and two on defense.

The team dominance was overwhelming for the outmatched Warriors, with Ferndale opening up a 21-point lead before the end of the first quarter and carrying a 60-0 lead into halftime.

The McClurg brothers — senior Rolland and junior Garyn — combined for four first-half TDs to help build an insurmountable lead, while the tone-setting Prescott Langer added two touchdowns, one in each half.

Hoopa fumbled the opening kickoff return to give the Cats great field position to start and they took full advantage, with Garyn McClurg getting the party started on a one-yard TD run barely two minutes in.

One of the strengths of this year’s Ferndale team is its overall play and dominance in all facets of the game, with the team defense and special teams consistently giving the offense excellent field position.

On Saturday, the special teams were outstanding again, and it began early.

After the Cats defense forced a quick three-and-out on Hoopa’s second possession, the Ferndale special teams went to work again, with Langer blocking a punt attempt by the Warriors and Rolland McClurg then recovering the ball in the end zone to double his team’s advantage.

That was the second big play by the special teams in the opening few minutes.

The Ferndale defense would get in on the action just minutes later, when Pidgeon scored on a 30-yard interception return, the first of two pick sixes for the Wildcats on the opening half.

Garyn McClurg and Langer would each add one-yard TD runs early in the second quarter to stretch the advantage to 35-0, the second of which was set up on Pidgeon’s second interception of the game, which gave his team possession at the Hoopa 35.

The Cats special teams would continue to set the tone in a wild two-minute spell later in the quarter with back-to-back punt returns for TDs.

The first was by Tristen Titus, who scored on a 55-yard return, and the second by Liam Bishop, who scored on a 45-yard return.

The Cats were just getting warmed up at that stage.

They closed out an incredible 39-point quarter with two more TDs in the final 28 seconds of the half.

Luke Dixon caused a fumble, which was recovered by the outstanding Garyn McClurg, who had a hand in several big plays in the opening two quarters.

That set up a nine-yard touchdown pass from Pidgeon to Dixon to put the Cats up 54-0.

And the home team would add to its tally on the next play from scrimmage, with Garyn McClurg capping an incredible first half for both him and his team with a second Ferndale pick six, this one from 30 yards out.

Langer added his second TD of the afternoon in the second half.

With the win, the Cats improved to 4-0 in the Little 4 and they sit one win ahead of Arcata (3-1) with two games remaining, including a showdown between the two schools at Arcata on the final weekend of the regular season.

Junior Christian Enriquez completed the home team’s dominance by nailing seven of his 10 PAT attempts.

With the loss, the Warriors dropped to 1-3 in the Little 4 and 2-6 overall.
