Penalty-prone Warriors fall to Trinity in final pre-conference game

The Hoopa Warriors finally got to play their home opener on Saturday night, but it didn’t go as well as the home fans would have liked.

The Warriors hosted Trinity in their final pre-conference game and were shut out 17-0.

The loss drops the Warriors to 1-3.

It was a performance marred by penalties and unfortunately for the Warriors they were unable to get much rhythm going.

“Every time the offense would get any momentum, we would get a penalty,” Hoopa head coach Curtis Kane said. “Or two or three. It’s very hard to work with 20 yards for a first down.”

There were some bright spots despite the loss, most notably the stellar play of Riley Baldy and Ethan Obie, each of whom “had a great game defensively,” according to the coach.

It wasn’t just the penalties that caused problems for the home team.

On two occasions when the Warriors went deep, the ball was deflected and intercepted.

“Nothing was going right,” Kane added.

The Warriors will have a bye next week before hosting Ferndale the following weekend in their conference opener.
