76ers roll to 17U tourney title; Eagles 19Us place third

Photos by Gina Muhs – The 76ers defeated the Humboldt Eagles for the 17U tournament championship on Sunday.

Mariqus Ludd and Jonah Anderson had big days at the plate on Sunday as the Southern Humboldt 76ers clinched the Humboldt Eagles 17U tournament championship.

The 76ers defeated the tourney hosts and rival Humboldt Eagles 12-2 in the decider at the Redwood Fields in Cutten.

In the 19U tournament, the host Eagles close out tournament play with a 12-9 victory over the Colts A team in the third-place game at Belotti Field.

Ludd enjoyed a good afternoon at the plate and finished 3-for-3 with three RBIs, while Anderson was equally effective and finished 3-for-4.

Mason Bell and Parker Prior both also impressed and each was 2-for-4, while Luke Dixon had a bases-clearing double to help key the 10-run victory.

Southern Humboldt’s Yoshi hatch added a base hit and drove in two runs.

The Eagles 19Us, meanwhile, capped a good tournament with a three-run win in a high-scoring showdown with the touring Colts.

The game lasted less than four full innings because of time limits.

Alex Jimenez continued his impressive summer with the Eagles with another big day at the plate.,

Jimenez has been one of the team’s most consistent players all summer and finished 3-for-3 with three RBIs.

McKinleyville’s Kolbey Stolpe also had a good day at the plate in the win and finished 2-for-2 with a double and three RBIs.

Cole Zeller, Cooper Ohlsen, Michael Manzi, Finn Warner and Garrett Levitt each also had a base hit for the Eagles.

 

Lyle McKinnon got the win on the mound.

The recent Hoopa High graduate threw three innings, allowing seven hits and five walks and striking out three.

Jimenez pitched the final inning to secure the win.

Next up, the Eagles will travel this week to compete in the Area 1 tournament in Fairfield.

The action gets under way on Thursday and runs through Sunday.

The Eagles open against Napa at 3 p.m.
