Both Eagles teams post shutouts in tournament openers

A pair of pitchers combined to carry a no-hitter into the sixth inning as the Humboldt Eagles 17Us got their annual American Legion baseball tournament off to a winning start at the Redwood Fields in Cutten on Thursday, defeating the Colts 10-0.

The Eagles 19Us also won their tournament opener at Belotti Field, defeating the Colts C team 8-0.

The four-day Eagles tournament continues through Sunday, with 17U and 19U brackets.

Kyle Giacone and Ryder Mitchell helped set the tone for the 17Us with big performances on the mound.

Giacone got the start and struck out eight in three innings, with Mitchell pitching two innings in relief and striking out six.

Brayden Bermers led the way at the plate and finished 2-for-3 with a pair of triples, while teammate Bryson Burns going 2-for-3 and driving in three runs.

The Eagles also had eight stolen bases as a team.

They will continue tournament play on Friday afternoon when they take on Legacy baseball at 2 p.m.

The Eagles 19Us, meanwhile, started fast in their tournament opener, scoring four runs in the opening two innings.

Joseph Forbes-Cappiello and Finn Warner led the Eagles at the plate with two hits each, including a triple by Forbes-Cappiello and a double by Warner.

Aidan Rice also had a solo home run for the host team, while Cole Zeller and Willie Nelson each also had a hit to round out a seven-hit team performance.

Four Eagles pitchers combined to hold the Colts bats to just two hits, including two hitless innings by Garrett Levitt and one by Rice.

Forbes-Cappiello and Lyle Mckinnon each also pitched and gave up one hit apiece.

McKinnon had four strikeouts in two innings work.

The Eagles 19Us will continue tournament play against the Colts A at 7:30 p.m. on Friday night.
