Former Eureka Logger Jackson Giacone turned in one of his best performances of the year in the biggest game of the season on Monday.
Giacone, who graduated from Eureka in 2022, finished 3-for-5 at the plate in the final to help lead Mt San Antonio College to a state championship in baseball.
It was the first state title for the program since 1965.
And Giacone, who has also played for the Humboldt Crabs, played a key role on the way to the trophy.
The Mounties won all three of their games at the four-team state tournament, which they hosted, including two in extra innings.
They opened with a 4-3 win over Sierra in 11 innings on Saturday, before advancing to the championship round with a 9-3 win over West Valley on Sunday.
A second matchup against West Valley in Monday’s decider also went to extra innings, with the Mounties prevailing 8-5 in 13 innings.
In addition to his three hits, Giacone also scored two runs and had a walk, an RBI and a stolen base.
And he scored what would turn out to be the winning run in the top of the 13th.
“This was a dream season, no doubt about it,” Mounties’ head coach John Knott told the school web site. “The season had to play itself out and we needed some good execution to get things done today.
“This is a great group of kids who bought in, and we knew nothing was going to be given to us. West Valley gave us everything, and we needed our best effort to get the job done.”

Giacone singled with one out in the top of the 13th, before advancing to second on a passed ball.
He would score moments later on a base hit by teammate Terrell Jackson.
That put the Mounties up 6-5.
They would add two insurance runs later in the inning.
Giacone also had a base hit in the tournament-opening win over Sierra.
His three hits in Monday’s decider was his second most in a game this season.
The redshirt freshman batted .237 this year with 32 RBIs, nine stolen bases and two home runs.
