The College of the Redwoods track and field teams traveled to compete in the NorCal championships at Butte College over the weekend, with four CR athletes advancing to the upcoming state championships.
The state meet will take place at the College of San Mateo next week.
The four Redwoods athletes to qualify include former Eureka Logger Anna Grimmett and former South Fork Cub Chase McFarland.
CR’s Houston Klug and Violet Cayton also are moving on to the prestigious meet out of the 13 CR athletes that competed at the NorCal meet.
To qualify for the state meet, an athlete has to either have a state qualifying mark during the season and place in the top six at the NorCals.
Grimmett placed sixth in the women’s 3,000 meter steeplechase, finishing in a time of 12 minutes, 47.96 seconds.
It was not her best time of the season, but it was fast enough to advance.
“She has improved a lot in this event,” CR head coach Reed Elmore said. “She is a technician over the barriers and the water pit.”
McFarland advanced in the women’s Hammer throw and also placed sixth in her event.
The 2023 South Fork graduate threw 139 feet in a tight competition, barely missing out on a top-three finish by less than a foot and a half.
Klug, meanwhile, also placed sixth in the men’s high jump, clearing 6’ 2.75”.

And Elmore believes he can do better at the state meet.
“Houston has been injured so he did not jump his full height, but we are hoping he’ll be healthy by state in two weeks,” the coach said.
Rounding out the CR state qualifiers, Cayton placed sixth in the women’s javelin with a throw of 96’ 10.25”.
Cayton also placed eighth in the hammer with a throw of 123’ 9.75” and barely missed out on qualifying in that event as well.
Likewise with former Del Norte Warrior Bryson Price and former Hoopa Warrior AJ Perez, each of whom also barely missed out on advancing to the state meet.
Price finished eighth in the men’s shot put with a throw of 45’ 3”, while Perez was ninth in the men’s javelin with a throw of 136’ 2.25”.
