The South Fork girls reminded us why they are one of the most dangerous teams in the H-DNL this spring with a doubleheader sweep over the Eureka Loggers on Monday.
The two schools faced off at Washington Elementary School in Eureka and it took extra innings to separate them in game one, with the visitors prevailing 11-10 in eight.
Game two was a more lopsided affair, with the Cubs comfortably prevailing 18-2.
The two victories stretched the Cubs’ winning streak to five straight as they improved to 13-3 on the season.
But they had to overcome a sluggish start to the day and an injury to a key contributor.
“In game one, we couldn’t get going,” head coach Lisa Todd said. “We were asleep at the plate and we weren’t making routine plays. The overall tempo was down.”
The South Fork girls, however, got better as the day progressed, and after securing a one-run win in the opener the bats came out swinging more freely in game two.
An injury to influential sophomore Mackenzie Coleman in the seventh inning of game one didn’t help matters, but her teammates stepped up in her absence.
Including her younger sister Leila, who also has been hugely influential for the team this spring and is showing no signs of slowing down.
The younger sibling took over at pitcher when Mackenzie exited and got both wins in the circle, while also finishing the day with six hits.
Leila had nine strikeouts on the day and allowed just two walks.
She finished 6-for-7 at the plate, with a triple, a double, a walk and four RBIs.

Sophomore Hailey Shepherd took over at shortstop after Leila moved to the circle and also impressed on defense and at the plate.
“The girls adjusted great to the changes,” Todd said.
The Eureka girls battled hard in game one and almost got their first win of the season.
Makenzie Wolff led the team at the plate and finished 3-for-4 with a triple, two RBIs and two runs, while both Mallorie Beauchamp and Megan Secor were 3-for-5, with Secor driving in a run and Beauchamp scoring one.
Macy Secor also 2-for-5 for the Loggers, with a double an RBI and two runs, while Koko Saulque was 2-for-5 with two RBIs and a run.
Bailey Brown added a double, while teammates Jaycee Childress and Kylie Secor each also had a hit to round out a 16-hit team performance.
Wolff pitched all eight innings as she continues to build some momentum in the circle.
She gave up just four earned runs and finished with 10 strikeouts.
For South Fork in game one, Mackenzie Coleman was 3-for-3 with a triple and two RBIs and a stolen base, while Shepherd finished 2-for-4 and Molly Perkins drew three walks.
In game two, Shepherd finished 2-for-3 with a double, two walks and four RBIs, while Makenzie Brewer went 2-for-4 with a double, and Perkins had a double, a walk and three RBIs.
Elizabeth Chivington also was 1-for-2 with two walks and two RBIs, while Kendall Kercher was walked three times.
“We focused more in the box and finally woke up in game two and picked it up,” Todd said.
In game two for Eureka, Wolff had a double, an RBI and scored a run, while freshman Broghan Lorenzen finished 1-for-2 with her first high school base hit.
Saulque added a base hit and an RBI, while Wolff and Brown split time in the circle.
Next up, the Cubs will host Hoopa in a Little doubleheader on Thursday, while the Loggers will host Fortuna in a Big 5 doubleheader on Saturday.
