A couple of young local mountain bikers continued to impress for the Humboldt Composite Mountain Bike Team (HCMTB) over the weekend.
The local squad, made up of mountain bikers from several different schools across the county, traveled to compete at the Six Sigma Winery in Lake County in the second of five races hosted this spring by the NorCal League of the National Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA).
The team traveled with 11 riders from local middle and high schools, and they placed an impressive fourth overall out of 19 composite-school teams.
Jade Lysander and Béla Randles led the HCMTB with podium finishes for each.
Lysander, a sixth-grader, placed first in his race for his second victory in the series, having also won his previous race at Fort Ord near Monterey Bay earlier in the month.
Randles also made the podium, finishing third in a competitive JV1 field.
In the first race of the day, HCMTB’s Dinon McIntosh placed 26th in a competitive varsity division, while teammate Grayden Larson followed that with a 12th-place finish in the JV2 race.
HCMTB’s Evelyn Seemann also impressed on her way to a 14th-place finish in the JV1 girls race.
Oliver Bullwinkle and Ambrose Kone, who were both competing in an NICA race for the first time, each enjoyed good debuts on their way to placing 31st and 56th, respectively, in the freshman category.
HCMTB’s Asa Jules and Nolan Kavanaugh raced head to head in the JV1 race and came in 30th and 35th, respectively, out of a field of 60 riders.
Rounding out the day for the local contingent of riders, sixth-grader Tucker Perez placed 32nd in his first-ever race and was followed closely by teammate Theo Loya in 34th.
It will be a quick turnaround for the local riders, who will be back in action this weekend at the Exchequer Mountain Bike Park in the Sierra Nevada foothills.
HCMTB Captain Evelyn Seeman contributed to this report.
