Claussen, Florvilus lead the way at CPH High School Relays

Seniors Isabella Claussen of Eureka and Laila Florvilus of St. Bernard’s both were double winners at the Cal Poly Humboldt High School Relays at the Redwood Bowl on Wednesday.

Fresh off another big winter on the basketball courts, Florvilus is off to a flying start in track and field.

The SB standout won Wednesday’s girls 100 meters in a time of 13.28 seconds, while also placing first in the high jump with a jump of 5 feet.

Claussen was equally impressive on the way to victories in the shot put (33’ 4.5”) and the discus (106’), setting a new PR in the latter.

Remarkably, Claussen’s win in the discus was 40 feet better than the field.

Other winners on the day included Arcata’s Zoe Cappuccio in the 1600m in a time of 6 minutes, 15.6 seconds, which barely edged Fortuna’s Brida Lester (6:15.64) by four hundredths of a second, as well as Arcata’s Anna McLaughlin in the long jump with a jump of 15’ 1”.

McLaughlin also teamed with Mayleah Jackson, Ada Kinziger and Bella DeCarli to place first in the SMR 800m relay (100-100-200-400).

Eureka’s Summer Morales, Evelyn Ladika, Rathlin Hemmingsen and Claire Gast teamed up to win the DMR 4000m relay (1200-400-800-1600).

The Eureka girls also won the team competition with 89 points, followed by Arcata (79), Fortuna (33) and St. Bernard’s (33).

In the boys competition, it was the Tigers who edged Eureka for the team win.

The Arcata boys scored 89 points, while the Loggers scored 85, with Fortuna (53) in third.

Fortuna’s Kavi Bolden placed first in the 100m in a time of 11.56 seconds, while Arcata’s Ocean Walker was first across the line in the 1600m in a time of 5:02.58.

Skyler Collenberg also won for the Tigers in the shot put, eding teammate Neiko Bryson with a throw of 43’ 1”, while Bryson edged Collenberg for the victory in the discus with a throw of 127’ 9”.

Eureka’s Rohan Hang took first in the high jump with a jump of 5’ 2”, while teammate Xavier De la Rosa and Fortuna’s Kye Hawthorne placed second and third, respectively, with the same mark.

In the boys long jump, Eureka’s Bo Landry placed first with a jump of 18’ 9”.

Eureka’s Michael Leen, Isaac Lopez, Tytan Blair and Emmitt Davison teamed up to win the 4x200m relay, while teammates Everett Docherty, Chase Jimenez, Patrick Abadeer and Marvin Barroso combined to win the 4x800m relay.

Docherty, Lopez and Jimenez also won the DMR 4000m relay for Eureka along with teammate Ryder Bullman, while Arcata’s Jack Bertell, Brock Rosales, Palavi Vainuku and Eoin McGoldrick teamed up to place first in the SMR 800m relay.
