After an outstanding season on the basketball courts, St. Bernard’s sophomore Garrett Shanahan is impressing early in the new baseball season.
The young Crusaders pitcher got his second win in two starts on Thursday, as the St. Bernard’s boys opened the Yreka tournament with a 5-2 win over the host school in six innings.
The victory on the mound follows a victory over Fortuna last weekend.
“Garrett Shanahan threw an absolute gem to lead us to victory,” said SB head coach Matt Tomlin, who added that the sophomore “was in command of all three of his pitches and beat a good Yreka team.”
Shanahan threw a complete game and allowed just two earned runs on two hits and one walk while striking out nine.
He wasn’t the only St. Bernard’s player to impress in what was just the team’s third game of the year.
With the team trailing 0-2 early in the game, Tyler Maples kickstarted the SB offense with an RBI double in the top of the third.
The Crusaders tied the game with a second run in the top of the fifth before taking their first lead of the afternoon with three runs in the top of the sixth.
Maples finished with two RBIs.
Tyler Hinrichs also had a good day and stole four bases while also playing “some outstanding defense at third base,” the coach said.
Michael Manzi also impressed for the visitors and finished 1-for-3 with an RBI, while Hinrichs was 1-for-2 with two walks and Quentin Ikeya went 1-for-3 with an RBI and scored twice.
Ikeya drove in freshman Henry Hinrichs for the winning run on a single after the young player stole third base on what Tomlin described as “a heads up base running play.”
Manzi added an insurance run on a big hit just moments later.
Next up, the Crusaders will continue tournament action against Etna on Friday morning at 11 a.m.
St. Bernard’s is now 2-1, while Yreka dropped to 2-2.
