Scoring runs is not proving to be a problem for the Ferndale girls early in the new softball season.
On Thursday, the Wildcats welcomed Hayfork to The Cream City and cruised to a 14-1 victory in five innings.
The win was the team’s first of the season, and in two games so far they have crossed home plate 23 times.
Remarkably, they won on Thursday with just one base hit while taking full advantage of 16 walks and four hit-by-pitches.
Makenzie Chambers got the team’s only hit of the game and finished 1-for-2 with a pair of RBIs.
Olivia Gossi got the win in the circle, pitching a complete game.
The Ferndale sophomore gave up just one earned run in five innings and stuck out five.
Gossi showcased her control by allowing no walks, just two days after she walked 10 in a road game at Willits.
Gossi helped her own cause by reaching base four times on three walks and a hit-by-pitch and scored three times.
“It was good to get our first win of the season,” Ferndale head coach Jeremy Griffith said.
The most impressive aspect of the performance was the team defense, and the Ferndale players stayed focused despite going up 12-0 after the opening inning.
They would add two more runs in the bottom of the second.
“I thought defensively, from pitching all the way through, we improved a lot since Tuesday,” the Ferndale coach added.
Young second baseman Fallon Bullan helped to anchor that defense with a strong performance.
“She’s just learning to play second base and she really put in a strong effort and made some plays there,” Griffith said of the sophomore standout.
Next up, the Wildcats are scheduled to play a doubleheader at Calistoga on Saturday as they continue their preparation for the upcoming league schedule.
Earlier this week, on Tuesday, the Ferndale girls opened the season at Willits, falling 12-9.
