By Ray Hamill — The College of the Redwoods men’s basketball made some more program history this weekend.

After winning a fourth Golden Valley Conference title in five seasons, the Corsairs dominated the postseason conference awards, earning three first-team selections and the MVP for the first time in school history.

Mason Mottashed has been named conference MVP, while former Fortuna Husky Alfonso Medina has been named to the all-conference team in his first season on the college courts, along with teammates Brandon Lucas and Ty Dahlin.

Marcos Rosales also received an honorable mention for CR, while Isai Sow has been included on the conference all-defensive team.

For good measure, head coach Ryan Bisio also was named conference coach of the year.

“Mason is one of the best players to ever put on a Redwoods uniform, and these well deserved awards solidify that now for the historical record,” Bisio said of Mottashed, who also was named to the all-state first team and is an all-American nominee. “The way Mason guided us to wins in the back half of league play was legendary, and I suspect he’s not done.”

The El Dorado, CA, native averaged 14.9 points a game, to go with 4.3 rebounds and 4.6 assists, and he had a conference high 108 3-pointers.

Medina, wasted no time adapting to the college courts.

He averaged 9.6 points, 4.2 rebounds and 2.2 assists.

“The coaches were adamant that Alfonso receive this award,” Bisio said. “His skill and grace and humanity are an inspiration to all of us every day. What a behemoth freshman year he’s had so far.”

Lucas and Dahlin each also played key roles on the path to the championship.

Lucas averaged 13.3 points and made good on 83 3-point attempts, which was second only to Mottashed in the GVC, while Dahlin averaged 11.1 points, 5.4 assists and 8.6 rebounds, showcasing his all-around ability.

“Brandon’s incredible shooting ability is what most people talk about, but it’s his playmaking and leadership which won him this honor,” Bisio said. “The well-roundness of his game and the expressiveness in which he plays is why he will be successful at the next level as much as his shooting.

“Ty played as well as any player in the league. He’s a walking triple-double and his unique skills and feel for the game are what allows his teammates the space to play their best ball.”

Bisio, along with associate head coach Justin Claus, has had an incredible impact on the program since taking over in the spring of 2019, and the success he has enjoyed in that time puts him among the best JC coaches in the state.

“Coach Bisio has established a winning culture and standard of excellence in our basketball program over the past six years that has reached levels of a dynasty,” CR Athletic Director Bob Brown said. “He and Justin continue to produce high quality and dynamic teams that believe in their system with full buy-in, and that has translated to tremendous and consistent success in a very challenging California Community College basketball league.

“They have truly made CR basketball a known and desired destination for many top prospects, including our local high school stars.”

And that’s not all the 2023 state coach of the year has brought to the table.

“Coach Bisio has also had an extremely positive influence on all our head coaches as leader and mentor in the department,” Brown added. “His players have always been great citizens and represented our athletic program in a positive way on the court, in the classroom and throughout the community, which is a direct reflection of his leadership.”

The Redwoods men closed out the regular season with a record of 21-7 and were 8-2 in the GVC, winning the title by two games.

The Corsairs will find out their playoff seed and opening opponent on Sunday morning.
