With victories in three of their final four games of the regular season, the College of the Redwoods women’s basketball team has a shot at making the playoffs.
The Corsairs played back-to-back games in the GVC round robin tournament in Redding on Thursday and Friday, falling to Butte 59-56, before immediately bouncing back with a 68-53 win over Siskiyous.
They closed out the regular season with a record of 11-16 overall and were 2-6 in the Golden Valley Conference and they came within four points of closing out with four straight wins.
“I thought we played (Butte) really well the whole game,” head coach Bree Northern said of Thursday’s game, which was tied in the final minute.
After the Roadrunners took a late three-point lead, the Corsairs had two chances to tie things up again and send the game to overtime, but came up just short.
“I am proud of the ladies for how hard they played the entire game,” added Northern who is in her first year in charge of the team. “I have seen us progress every game this season and that is a testament to their hard work every day.”
The following night they faced a solid Siskiyous team that had 17 wins on the season and the Corsairs avenged a pair of conference losses with the victory.
And they did with a comfortable 15-point margin.
“It was a great game,” Northern said. “We shared the ball really well and hit 12 3-pointers as a team. We played like a cohesive group and they had some beautiful moments out there on the court.”
Former Arcata Tiger Nora Talty led the way offensively for the Corsairs and finished with a team-high 19 points.
The freshman guard was on fire from downtown and had five 3-pointers.

A pair of former Eureka Loggers also played key roles in the win.
Aniah Gaither had a double-double, finishing with 19 rebounds and 12 points, one day after scoring 18 in the loss to Butte.
Moriah Bowles also had 16 points, including four 3s, in Friday’s win.
“It was a team effort and I am so proud of how far we have come,” Northern said.
The playoff brackets will be announced on Sunday and thanks to their three late wins, the Corsairs are in contention for inclusion.
“The girls have worked extremely hard to get to where we got,” Northern said. “And they are not ready to be done.”
