If the first round of H-DNL boys golf is any indicator, it should be a fun spring for the league.
The league season got under way at the Redwood Golf & Country Club in Fortuna on Monday, with five different schools represented in the top six.
There was also a tight race for the first team win of the campaign, with just three strokes separating a pair of league rivals.
And the course was in great shape for the opening round.
“It was great conditions, great weather and a nice day,” said Arcata head coach Jeff Mielke, whose golfers edged McKinleyville for the team win. “Redwood Empire is in great shape. They’re pretty on it keeping care of the course over the winter.”
Arcata senior Ryzen Miller had the low score of the day to help lead the Tigers to the victory.
Barely.
Miller shot a 78 to edge his teammate, freshman Matisse Stuan, for the individual win in a tight race.
Just seven strokes separated the top six golfers on the day.
Staun finished just one stroke behind Miller after shooting a 79, with McKinleyville’s Jared Brunner two strokes further back after shooting an 81 for third.
St. Bernard’s Braedon Simpson also looks ready to contend for this year’s league title after placing fourth with a round of 83, with a pair of golfers — Eureka’s Kaden Goodman and Fortuna’s Cooper McWhorter — tying for fifth after posting identical rounds of 85.
McKinleyville’s Morgan Zhao (89), Eureka’s Carter Hernandez (89), Fortuna’s Lucas Butler (90) and Eureka’s Henry Goodman (95) rounded out the top 10 individual rounds of the day.
A total of 16 golfers broke 100.
As a team, the Arcata boys shot a 359, with McKinleyville shooting a combined 362.
The second round of league play will take place at Beau Pre Golf Course in McKinleyville on March 26.
