The Cal Poly Humboldt men’s basketball team suffered their second straight loss on Thursday night, falling 70-65 at Cal State Dominguez Hills, the No. 14 team in the nation.

The loss dropped the Jacks to 10-9 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.

But with three games remaining they are tied for fourth in the standings and well in the chase for one of the six conference tournament berths.

They gave the conference-leading Toros (21-4, 18-1 CCAA) all they could handle and came close to knocking them off a second time.

After trailing by 10 at halftime, Humboldt stormed out in the second half and outscored Dominguez Hills 24-9 in a seven-minute span.

A Kalib LaCount 3-pointer capped the rally and gave the Jacks a 47-42 lead with 13:09 to play.

But Dominguez Hills would respond with its own run, slowly regaining control thanks to clutch free-throw shooting.

The Toros shot 19-of-20 from the line in the second half.

The Jacks, who are now 14-10 overall and tied with Cal Poly Pomona for fourth in conference, will play their final road game of the regular-season against Cal State Los Angeles (11-14, 9-10 CCAA) on Saturday.

They return home to play Cal State San Marcos and Sonoma State to close out the regular season next week.

The Cal Poly Humboldt also were in action on Thursday and fell 71-51 to No. 2 Dominguez Hills.

The loss ended a four-game winning streak for the Humboldt women, who dropped to 8-11 and 9-16.

Kyori Lloyd led the Lumberjacks with a standout performance, posting a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds.

It is Lloyd’s fourth straight double-double and fifth of the season.

The CPH women will try to bounce back at Cal State Los Angeles on Saturday.
