Sow leads the team defense as Corsairs win again at San Mateo

The College of the Redwoods men’s basketball team capped a good two days at the San Mateo tournament with an 85-79 win over Ohlone on Tuesday.

The win followed a 74-66 win over the host team on Monday and lifted the Corsairs to 13-5 on the season.

Tuesday’s game was the last one for the CR men before they tip off the Golden Valley Conference at home against Butte College next Wednesday.

Ohlone came into the game as the No. 17 team in the state, five spots ahead of Redwoods.

“Another gutsy performance by our guys,” CR head coach Ryan Bisio said after Tuesday’s win. “Plenty of plot twists and turns in this one, and we just stayed steady and closed the game out. Not easy to do against such a quality opponent.”

Ty Dahlin led the CR offense for the second straight night and scored a team-high 18 points, while teammate Brandon Lucas also continued to impress and added 16 points.

It was another back-and-forth game that saw CR open up an early 38-21 lead before Ohlone came storming back to carry a three-point advantage (42-39) into halftime.

However, the CR defense would step up in the second half, led by Isai Sow.

“Isai Sow really gave us the defensive footing we needed late and took the challenge of guarding whoever was hot in any given moment,” Bisio said. “His courage and toughness played a big part in this result.”

Mason Mottashed added 15 points in the win, while teammate Alfonso Medina chipped in 13 points.

CR hit 12 3-pointers.

“Overall, this was a great weekend,” Bisio said. “We were tested in all the right ways, passed a lot of the tests and won the games on top of it.

“Learning valuable lessons while winning feels great.”

CR’s game against Butte tips off at 5 p.m.

Butte is 10-8.
