
It’s been a good start to the new year for the McKinleyville girls basketball team, which will play for the championship at the Enterprise tournament on Thursday afternoon.
The Panthers opened tournament play with a 48-28 win over Weed on New Year’s Eve, and followed that with a 45-29 win over Fall River in Wednesday’s semifinal.
The Mack girls have now won six of their last eight games as they improved to 11-4 on the season.
Gabby Watson scored a game-high 21 points against Weed and helped set the tone in a big third quarter that saw the Panthers take control of the game.
The standout senior hit three 3-pointers in an 18-point period for the team.
Fellow senior Tatum Fisher also had a big game as she continues her impressive season.
Fisher scored 13 points in the win, while teammate MaryAnn Som chipped in seven points.
The Panthers continued to roll the following day when they matched up against Fall River with a place in the tournament final up for grabs.
Freshman Olivia Murphy enjoyed one of her most productive days for the team and led the way the offense with 12 points in the win.
Watson added 10 points and Bailee Box finished with six points in what was a more balanced offensive team performance.
Senior Sarah McCray also contributed with six points, while Fisher added five points.
The Panthers will play Modoc for the tournament championship at 2 p.m.
They open conference play at home against Eureka on Tuesday night.
