Panthers split a pair of non-tournament games against Hoopa and U Prep

The McKinleyville Panthers split a pair of non-tournament girls basketball games last week, getting the better of Hoopa by a score of 53-26 on Friday and losing to University Prep 59-53 on Saturday.

The Panthers led Hoopa by 10 at halftime and ended any chance of a comeback after the break, outscoring the Warriors 25-8 over the final two quarters.

Tatum Fisher had a big game in the win and finished with a game-high 21 points, while teammate Gabby Watson finished with 13 points.

Bailee Box also impressed for McKinleyville and chipped in nine points in the win.

No stats were immediately available for Hoopa.

The loss was the second straight to a Big 5 opponent for the Warriors, who also fell to Del Norte 67-58 in their final pre-Christmas game.

The warriors are now 4-5 on the season.

The Hoopa girls will travel to play at the Etna tournament later this week.

The Panthers faced a tougher challenge on Saturday when they hosted a quality University Prep team that also defeated Del Norte last week.

No stats were immediately available for that game.

With the loss, the McKinleyville girls dropped to 9-4.

University Prep, which also defeated Del Norte last week, improved to 11-1.

Next up, the McKinleyville girls will host Weed on Tuesday afternoon at 4 p.m.

They open conference play at home against Eureka on Tuesday of next week.
