The Fortuna Huskies improved to 2-0 with a comfortable 54-18 win over a young Hayfork team on Monday night.
Also in action on Monday, the McKinleyville Panthers tipped off the new season with a 52-17 win over Kelseyville.
On Saturday, the Eureka Loggers suffered their first loss of the young season, falling 44-34 to San Marin.
At Fortuna, the Huskies quickly took control of their game, running out to a 20-2 lead in the opening quarter and they never looked back.
Jorlynn Villalvazo led the way in the victory and finished with 15 points and eight rebounds, while teammate Evalynn Little added six points and 13 boards.
“The team played well against a very young Hayfork team,” Fortuna head coach Tom Chapman said.
Kalie Chittendon also impressed in the win and chipped in nine points.
Next up, the Fortuna girls will travel for the Colusa High tournament, opening against Yuba on Thursday.
The McKinleyville girls were equally impressive in their season opener against Kelseyville.
The Panthers trailed 10-9 after the opening quarter but grew into the game and would hold Kelseyville to just seven points over the final three quarters.
After a big fall playing soccer for the Panthers, senior Gabby Watson has quickly adapted to the basketball court and scored a game-high 17 points in the win.
Lily Battilocchi and Bailee Box each added nine points for McKinleyville.
On Saturday, the Eureka girls suffered their first loss of the season.
Samara Gaither, who has been a force offensively early in the new season, scored a team-high 15 points in the loss, while teammate Nashaya Williams added nine points.
“We had many opportunities but were unable to capitalize on anything today,” Eureka head coach Cliff Napoleon said after the game. “Just how it goes sometimes.”
Eureka is now 2-1.
Next up, the Loggers will travel to play at the Gridley tournament, opening against Oroville on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
