Successful start to the new season for both Fortuna teams

The Fortuna boys and girls basketball teams tipped off the new season with victories over the weekend.

The boys team welcomed Fort Bragg to Fortuna and won 55-31, while the girls team traveled to Fort Bragg and won 57-16.

Mariah Bravo led a balanced team performance for the Fortuna girls and finished with a team-high 13 points, as four Huskies finished with nine or more points.

Kalie Chittendon also impressed for the visitors and added 12 points, while Macee Marquez scored 11 points and Piper Murray finished with nine.

Evalynn Little also impressed and led the Huskies in rebounds.

This year’s Fortuna team is relatively young with just four seniors on the roster.

The Fortuna boys, meanwhile, also enjoyed a balanced team performance, with several of their players just recently finishing up their football season.

The Huskies dominated the boards and out-rebounded the Timberwolves 44-18.

Owen Wallen got the new season off to an impressive start and had a double-double in the win, scoring a team-high 16 points and pulling down a team-high 10 rebounds.

Jack Stacy also impressed for the Huskies and added 10 points, while Chandler Crenshaw, Gavin Mayberry, and Alejandro Medina each had six rebounds.

Fort Bragg led the game 14-13 at the end of the first quarter, but the Fortuna defense would step up after that and held Fort Bragg to five points in the second quarter and eight points in the third quarter as the home team gradually took control.

The Huskies will travel to Covelo for a Foundation Game against Round Valley on Tuesday night before hosting Ukiah on Friday night.
