Local players shine as CR women split a pair of games at San Mateo

College of the Redwoods sophomore Alia Prentiss has made a seamless transition from the soccer field to the basketball court.

The former Arcata Tiger and multi-sport Corsair continued her impressive start to the new basketball season with a big game on Friday night, as the College off the Redwoods women beat Hartnell 61-47 at the College of San Mateo Crossover.

Prentiss finished with a double-double, scoring 20 points and adding 11 rebounds.

She also had seven steals.

The Corsairs opened the two-day event with just six players on hand, but battled their way to the victory.

“The girls played super hard,” CR head coach Bree Northern said. “We struggled at the start of the game but the ladies continued to fight back and found a way to take the lead in the second half.

“I’m super proud of how we played. Only having six girls, we never gave up. I could not be more proud of the ladies for working hard the entire game.”

All six players contributed in the win.

Moriah Bowles added 17 points and seven rebounds, while Caidence Young finished with 12 points.

Also impressing, Aniah Gaither had 14 rebounds and six points, Kimberly Lewis had five rebounds and four points, and Macy Yarbrough added two points.

After the CR volleyball team’s season ended on Friday night, the Corsairs had more players available for a Saturday game against San Mateo, but lost 70-62.

The CR women are now 3-2 on the season.

Lewis scored a team-high 16 points in the loss and helped set the early tone with six points in the opening quarter.

Bowles, who has been one of the team’s most effective offensive shooters early in the season, added 15 points and seven rebounds, while Prentiss scored 11 points.

Kyla Albee added six points, Gaither finished with five points and six rebounds, and Young had three steals.

“The ladies played hard the whole game,” Northern said. “We struggled at times with the pressure from San Mateo, but the ladies continued to fight until the end.”

Foul trouble was a concern, particularly in the paint.

“Our bigs got in foul trouble early in the second half,” the first-year CR coach added. “Managing their playing time changed the flow of the game for us.”

The foul problems continued late in the game, as the host team went to the free-throw line 19 times in the fourth quarter.

Next up, the Corsairs will travel to play at the Sierra College Crossover next weekend.
