FOOTBALL ROUNDUP — Cats continue to roll on busy night for H-DNL

By Ray Hamill — It was a busy night for the H-DNL football teams on Friday with six of the nine varsity teams in action.

In the Little 4, the Ferndale Wildcats continued to roll with a big 56-0 win at McKinleyville.

In non-conference action, the St. Bernard’s Crusaders returned to winning ways with a 23-10 win over Grace Baptist Academy in Tennessee, while the Fortuna Huskies dropped their fourth straight game, falling 32-28 at Silverado High in Victorville.

The Eureka Loggers also were in action at Biggs High and won 43-0 with one of their most complete performances of the season, while South Fork hosted Roseland Prep and lost a high-scoring game 44-42.

Eureka is now 2-4, while the Cubs dropped to 0-4

At McKinleyville, the visiting Wildcats spoiled the Panthers’ homecoming festivities with a lopsided victory as they improved to 6-0 on the season and 2-0 in the Little 4.

The outmatched Panthers dropped to 0-6 and 0-2.

The visitors quickly took control of the game with six first-half touchdowns, including four in the second quarter, and they led 42-0 at the break.

After that, there was no way back for the Panthers, who suffered their third straight shutout loss.

Junior quarterback Tanner Pidgeon scored three first-half TDs for the visitors.

He got the party started with a QB sneak on the Cats’ first possession of the game and would add a 14-yard TD run early in the second quarter to stretch the lead to 21-0.

Pidgeon would score his 17th touchdown of the season on a long punt return four minutes into the second quarter.

Fellow junior Prescott Langer also found the end zone on a 10-yard run in the opening quarter, while impressive sophomore Garyn McClurg added a 25-yard TD run with five minutes remaining in the opening half to stretch the lead to 35-0.

The misery continued for the home team before halftime, when Pidgeon threw a short pass to Luke Dixon, who took it 30 yards to the end zone for his team’s sixth TD of the half.

Injuries to some key players didn’t help matters for the Panthers, who started the second half with just 12 players and finished the game with just 11.

It was another tough night for the Fortuna Huskies, who dropped to 2-5 on the season.

The Huskies fell behind early and were never able to recover fully although they made it interesting at the end.

They trailed 12-0 after the opening quarter and 19-6 at halftime.

The Hawks would stretch the advantage to 19 in the third quarter (25-6), before the Huskies began to eat into the deficit.

A 35-yard touchdown run by junior Mako Limon and a two-point conversion pulled them within 11 late in the third quarter and they would add to their tally in the fourth to move within five points of the home team.

However, the Hawks added to their advantage with a fifth touchdown midway through the final period and led 32-20.

A late Jake Houseworth TD run narrowed the gap again for Fortuna, but it was too little too late and the Hawks recovered the ensuing onside kick and held on for the victory.

Silverado improved to 4-3 on the season.

The Huskies will have a bye next week before kicking off the Big 4 at Del Norte in two weeks.
