Madyson Nelson and the Arcata Tigers continued their surge towards individual and team league titles in H-DNL girls golf on Thursday, but the runaway league leader was pushed closer than she has been at any stage in league play.
Nelson, who is the defending league champion, posted the low score of the day for the fifth time in five rounds of H-DNL action as the girls traveled to the Eureka Municipal Golf Course.
The Tigers senior shot a 98 for the win, but teammate Lucia Hernandez was right on her heels with a round of 99.
Hernandez’s round was not only eight strokes better than her previous best score in league play but it was also just the fifth time this season that any of the H-DNL golfers broke 100.
The other four sub-100 rounds all have come from Nelson, who stretched her lead in the season standings to an insurmountable 39 strokes with two rounds of league action remaining.
The Arcata girls took the team win to increase their lead in the team season standings.
Del Norte’s Bria Larson had the third best round of the day with a 105, followed by St. Bernard’s Ingrid Monaghan (107) and Estella Monaghan (109), giving the Crusaders two girls in the top five.
Del Norte’s Jaylee Keeling had the next best round of the day with a 110, with Arcata’s Lily Cunningham (111), Arcata’s Toni Diaz (112), Fortuna’s Mariah Bravo (112), Eureka’s Hailey Forester (116) and McKinleyville’s Addie Morrison (117) rounding out the top 11.
All six schools competing had at least one golfer each place in the top 11.
Hernandez is second in the season standings (428), two strokes better than Ingrid Monaghan in third (430).
Cunningham is fourth (434), followed by Larson (439), Estella Monaghan (444) and Morrison (454).
The top seven golfers receive all-league honors.
The league season continues next week at Del Norte, before concluding at Baywood in two weeks.
