The Cal Poly Humboldt women’s soccer team is making some noise before the first official kick of the new season.

Late last week, it was announced that the Lumberjacks are ranked No. 4 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association preseason poll.

The Jacks are coming off one of their best ever seasons last year under the guidance of head coach Grant Landy.

The CPH women finished with 13 wins in 2023, which was the most in program history, and also earned their first CCAA Tournament victory over Stanislaus State in double overtime.

Cal Poly Pomona is ranked No. 1 in the preseason poll, followed by No. 2 Cal State San Marcos and No. 3 Cal State Los Angeles.

Rounding out the top five is CPH rival Chico State.

The Jacks and Wildcats are 2-2 over their last four meetings, all of which have been decided by one goal.

The Jacks played two exhibition games last week, tying Oregon Tech 0-0 and defeating Southern Oregon 1-0.

The CPH women will be back in action this weekend when they travel to Redding to play a third and final exhibition game against Simpson.

The Jacks officially kick off the new season at home against Azusa Pacific on Sept. 5.

The CPH women led the conference in many offensive categories in 2023, including shots per game (16.8) and shots on goal per game (7.5).

They were also second in save percentage and will have their starting goalkeeper, Carson Thomson-Terrel, back for her junior season.

Humboldt will have six starters back from a team that went 13-5-2 (6-4-1 CCAA) in 2023, including Megan Janikowski, who was named to the CCAA Preseason Watchlist, having earned second-team all conference honors last season.

  1. polls mean zilch… results are what matter… wins and losses… ensuring the trajectory stays upwardly focused… momentum into playoffs…

    … 4 goalkeepers?

Anyhow, nice to see the front row players wearing, “appropriately sized shinguards that offer reasonable protection”…
