Giants to play for championship after come-from-behind win

The Northern Humboldt Giants will play for the Humboldt Eagles American Legion baseball tournament championship on Sunday afternoon.

On Saturday, the Giants 17Us completed a perfect run through pool play with a big come-from-behind 6-3 win over Lassen.

Earlier in the day, they defeated the Tehama Bulls 14-2 in five innings.

The Giants trailed 3-1 going into the seventh inning of their game against Lassen, but rediscovered their bats at an opportune time.

A two-RBI double by Joe Capp completed the comeback.

“This team has been gritty all season,” head coach Eric Agliolo said. “They’ve been able to hang in there and come back and do what they have to do.”

Preston Daniels got the start on the mound and threw 4.1 solid innings, allowing three unearned runs on two hits and striking out six.

Rhythm Green threw 1.2 hitless innings in relief and struck out four, before Ben Lukens pitched the final inning to secure the win.

The Giants were unable to get much going at the plate to support their pitchers early in the game, with several pop-ups for outs.

“It was kind of a frustrating game and we gave them three unearned runs,” Agliolo said. “But they finally made the adjustments and had better at-bats in the seventh inning.”

Earlier in the day, the Giants quickly took care of business against the Bulls.

Joe Tanno got the start on the hill and continued his impressive summer with the team.

The soon-to-be McKinleyville sophomore pitched five innings of one-hit ball and struck out six.

Lukens, who has been on fire at the plate this summer, finished 2-for-3 with two home runs, his second and third in tournament play.

Bode Reininger also impressed and was 2-for-2 with a double, while Capp and Brandon Romero each was 2-for-4, with the latter hitting a double.

Green also had a double and Tanner Kees rounded out a 10-hit team performance.

“We got after them quick and stayed on top,’ Agliolo said.

Sunday’s championship game will take place at the Redwood Fields in Cutten at 2 p.m.
