The Humboldt Eagles scored 13 runs in the opening two innings against Legion Post 174 in their own 19U tournament opener on Thursday night.

Playing at Belotti Field across from the Redwood Acres, the Eagles went on to win the game 17-4.

Cody Collins got the start on the mound and threw 3.1 innings for the win.

The former Fortuna Husky standout allowed just one run on three hits and two walks and struck out six.

“We jumped ahead early and didn’t look back,” Eagles head coach Tommy Gale said. “Cody Collins put together a great start and we kept him to a limited pitch count.”

The limited pitch count will allow Collins to feature again for the team later in tournament play.

The four-day, 12-team Eagles tournament runs through Sunday, with 30 games scheduled in 19U and 17U brackets.

Ryder Mitchell led the tourney hosts at the plate and finished 1-for-1 with three walks, three runs and an RBI.

Rylan Lommori, Cooper Ohlsen, Royce Olson and Alex Jimenez each also had a base hit in the win, with Olson driving in two runs and Ohlsen one.

Garrett Levitt and Mateo Gutierrez each also had an RBI.

Gutierrez, Nolan Neff and Matt Pleasant all pitched in relief.

“It was an all-around great team win,” added Gale, whose team continues tournament play against Colts A at Belotti Field on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. “And we’re looking to take this moment into (Friday) night’s game.”
