By Ray Hamill — College of the Redwoods football is succeeding on and off the field of play.

After securing a first bowl game victory in 30 years last fall, 15 of the players on that team will continue their careers at four-year programs.

And that’s an impressive number for the program and head coach Jason White, who has made Corsairs football relevant again.

Included in that group are five local standouts.

Quarterback Max Hough, a former Fortuna Husky who was a two-time all-conference selection with CR, will play at Division-II Colorado Mesa, along with former Ferndale Wildcat Lane Branstetter, a defensive back.

Two other Corsairs will continue their playing careers at New Mexico Highlands, another NCAA D-II program.

Former Eureka Logger Chase Steubing, a standout linebacker, will join the Cowboys along with New Mexico native Nate Lopez, who played receiver for the Corsairs.

Del Norte’s Tanner Forkner, who also was a two-time all-conference selection for CR at linebacker, will take his talents to College of Idaho, an NAIA program.

Defensive lineman Jayden Sandusky and defensive back Mason Priddy both also were two-time all-conference selections with the Corsairs and both also will now continue their playing careers at four-year programs.

Sandusky will play for Division-I Portland State, while Priddy will play at Division-II Gannon University in Pennsylvania.

Another former Husky, Joey Quen, who also played baseball at CR, will take his talents to Mount Marty University, an NAIA school in South Dakota, where he is expected to have an immediate impact on the offensive line.

Also moving on, defensive lineman Marcus Irby will play for Division-II Adams State in Colorado, wide receiver Donte Hurt will play for Valley City State, an NAIA team in North Dakota, and wide receiver Sean LaChapelle will join Southern Oregon.

And rounding out the group of Corsairs moving on, defensive back Jack Hartman will play for D-III Dickinson State in North Dakota, running back Emmanuel Igbonogwam will play for D-II Minot State in North Dakota, defensive back Gabe Ward will play for D-II Bemidji State University in Minnesota and linebacker Jacob Olivares will play at D-II Sul Ross State University in Texas.

The Corsairs will kick off the 2024 season at Merced on Sept. 7.
