Vigil delivers in the clutch on his way to second league title

Eureka’s Talon Vigil delivered in the clutch on Monday on his way to securing a second H-DNL championship in boys golf in three years.

The Loggers senior held his nerve down the stretch of the final round of league play at Baywood Golf and Country Club and shot a 75 to secure the league title, including a birdie on the 18th.

Vigil held a four-stroke lead in the season standings heading into the final round, with longtime rival Jack Kramer of St. Bernard’s his only real challenger.

And with Kramer pushing him all the way, it took a composed finish by the Eureka standout to secure the title.

The impressive Vigil also won the league title as a sophomore and closes out his high school career with four top-three finishes in league in four seasons, having placed second as a freshman and third last year.

Kramer would shoot a 74 for the low round of the day for his third victory in six rounds of league competition this year and would finish second in the season standings, just three strokes back of Vigil.

Vigil’s teammates Julian Goodman and Jerome Lyons had the next best rounds of the day with a 79 and an 81, respectively, with McKinleyville’s Jake Gardner and Arcata’s Zayne Morris-Slattery finishing with identical rounds of 82 to round out the top six.

As expected, the Eureka Loggers held on for the team championship.

The Loggers comfortably won the final round by 28 strokes to hold off Arcata for the championship.

McKinleyville was third in the final standings, followed by Fortuna in fourth and St. Bernard’s in fifth.

The top seven individuals in the season standings all received all-league honors.

Gardner placed third overall, followed by Goodman in fourth and the Arcata trio of Mason Alway, Joaquin Ponce and Lucas Wemberly rounding out the White Stars and finishing fifth through seventh, respectively.

Alway shot an 85 on Monday, while Ponce had an 87 and Wemberly a 93.

Andrew Stewart (84) and Wyatt Zerlang (87) gave the league champion Loggers five golfers under 90 for the day.

McKinleyville had three boys break 90, with Carter Reeves (86) and Morgan Zhao (89) following Gardner.

St. Bernard’s Carson Johnson also had a 90, as did Del Norte’s Kai Russell.

Michael Hansen led Fortuna with a 97, Braeden Rice led Ferndale with a 109, and Littlefoot Williams and Liam Soto both led Hoopa with rounds of 128.

Next up for the local golfers is the North Coast Section Division-2 championships, which will be held on May 6 at the Metropolitan Golf Links in Oakland.
